Where Am I, Actually?

Where you are is at a website. My website. My website I made on Neocities. My website I am continuously building from scratch, and what will most likely be an ongoing forever project, currently in its infancy.

I am no master when it comes to coding. I learn what I can, when I can and this site evolves with me. It's a hobby, a pass time, a crude form of self expression. The most affordable method of transhumanism, if you want to go that far.

I can't tell you why you're here but I can tell you why this exists, or at least why I started. So stay awhile and listen I guess, if you want a bite-sized nonsensical manifesto.

Why Did You Make This?

I had access to the virtual world since I was a hatchling. Though, being so young I was never able to fully grasp what I was witnessing, as in everything behind the scenes and all of its cogs and gears. Pokemon fansites or sites dedicated to documenting the natural world were, at the time, mindblowing. Packed with all the information I could ever want to know about my favorite subjects, in the form of digital labors of love. Things I couldn't always find in my Zoobooks. I haven't even mentioned the sheer amount of creativity that went into these spaces. Fansites in particular were packed with unique art and writing that would have probably never shown itself to the world otherwise. I really admired the dedication that went into making them.

Only as I witnessed corporations swallow cyberspace into their abhorrent maws and turn the World Wide Web into a hellish advertisement nightmare sludge did I truly realize what was lost. The kind of love and artistry put into the internet has been descending to extinction. It's hard now to use it without buying products, or heck, becoming the product yourself. As internet use became more prominent it was inevitable for it to become commercialized. In short, everything is just about generating profit for the greedy now. It's a miracle when it isn't.

I may have been too late for the golden age of the internet but I do not believe it's ever too late to learn from it. Or even to change it. Just like all history, the history of the internet is important to preserve and learn from. Making a silly website is far from anything radical or historical but I'm still grateful there are cracks in the web where self-expression still lives. This wouldn't exist if there wasn't an appreciation for what came before. Or hope that we can build anew. For the first time, I get to have a corner that's as close to my own as I can get. I'm thankful for that, even if it's nothing spectacular.

So I started this project as a recording of my own self expression. A form of expression that is a tribute to a past in our present. It's an attempt to combine the old and the new. It's a measurement of progress. It's an everything that isn't much of anything at all. But it's mine, and you're here witnessing it. For a moment across time and space, you got to know a little bit about me. Isn't that beautiful?
